Overview of symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the training process in all educational levels. In this symposium a multilevel approach of pre-service and in-service training and interventions developed by the Laboratory of School Psychology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, taking into consideration the emerging needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be presented. The symposium will include two parts: Part A) presentations will include selective interventions and resources developed at a national and international level; Part B) presentations will include services provided to different types of schools/institutions in several areas of Greece during the pandemic.

“Feeling CARED in School: A Journey Around the World” project: Students’ perspectives

Summary

The school is a system that affects students’ psychosocial adjustment by providing opportunities for social support and emotional growth even in challenging periods. The Laboratory of School Psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the ISPA School Psychology Trainers Task Force, and the ISPA Student Organizing Committee developed the International Project: “School Well-Being”. This international initiative aims to highlight the role of school as a protective factor that promotes and fosters children’s resilience especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this presentation the main goals, features and procedural steps of the development of the project will be described. Furthermore, the posters and handouts from participating schools/classes will be presented. The poster of each participating class is a result of group discussion and reflection based on the discussion handout illustrates the way that students feel safe, connected and cared in their school during the challenging period of the pandemic COVID-19. School/class reflections and posters will be presented at an international digital exhibition, as an effort of collaboration of different schools around the world. Finally, the importance of organizing and implementing programs at an international level at times of global crises is highlighted.

A multilevel training and intervention approach for enhancing professional competence and supporting school communities during the COVID-19 pandemic in Greece

Summary

The changes in the functioning of school communities, school closures and physical distancing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic caused an immediate need to trainers worldwide to respond and adapt to this new imposed reality. In an effort to respond to the emerging needs the Laboratory of School Psychology, National and Kapodistrian University of Greece  has developed a multi-level approach that included a series of actions to respond to the emerging needs of school communities including research, pre-service and in-service training, development of resources and guidelines, consultation, collaboration with schools and  agencies. In this presentation the emphasis will be placed on aspects of training at a graduate and undergraduate level. In addition, different aspects of the training and supervision process will be presented along with interventions developed in relation to practicum and internship of the graduate students of school psychology. The role of the University as a change agent in relation to training and supporting school communities in times of adversity is highlighted and best practices are discussed.

Development of resources for the psychosocial support of school communities during the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary

School and family play a key role in facilitating children’s psychosocial adaptation during crises. In this context, resources with useful tips and guidelines regarding the management of children’s and adolescents’ emotional reactions may be additionally helpful for adults supporting children in their parental and teaching role. In this presentation a series of informative resources developed by the Laboratory of School Psychology of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will be presented. Specifically, 14 booklets in Greek (also translated into English, German, French, Αrabic, and Farsi) have been developed, for the promotion of resilience and the psychosocial support of teachers, parents and children during the different stages of the pandemic. Finally, conclusive remarks on student needs, implications, protective individual and systemic factors based on the implementation of the activities in various classes around Greece during the pandemic will be discussed.
